Location

ATLOW

Atlow is a sleepy little hamlet made up of a jumble of cottages in its own little valley, close to Ashbourne and Carsington Water. It really is a ‘sleepy cats on Aubretia clad walls’ type of place. As you drop down into the valley it seems like a different world. Little lanes run off into the surrounding countryside as the babbling brook meanders down the dale.

There are no local facilities which adds to its peaceful atmosphere but the Red Lion Inn is worth a walk across the fields because it does good pub grub and great ales. Carsington Water is just a little further on where you will find wild water sports, cycle hire, bird watching galore, a children’s adventure playground, visitor centre and craft shops.

Ashbourne is just over the hill but you must visit the historic little town of Wirksworth. With its Civic Trust awards, it is full of characterful cottages, local shops, a couple of cafes and Le Mistral restaurant that has had a good reputation for years. There is even the Star Disk, the Northern light micro-cinema and the Ecclesbourne Valley heritage railway to explore.

Local pubs – The Red Lion Inn in Hognaston, The Red Lion in Kniveton and The Knockerdown in Carsington.

ASHBOURNE

Ashbourne is a lovely old Victorian market town at the southern end of the Peak District National Park. Known as the ‘Gateway to the Peaks’ it has lots of designer clothes shops, antique emporiums, restaurants and pubs gathered around the cobble market square and in the surrounding streets.

Close to famous Dove Dale with its stepping stones across the river, Thorpe Cloud with its magnificent views and the Lovers Leap, if you dare, there are few better places to go for a walk in the fantastic countryside. Another must visit is Paradise Walk by the side of the river Manifold from the picturesque village of Ilam.

You might also fancy walking or cycling from the centre of the town along the Tissington Trail up into the Peaks. Carsington Water with its wild water sports, birdwatching, cycle trail and visitor centre is also close by. And a short drive will soon get you to Matlock Bath, Bakewell, Chatsworth, and then into the heart of the National Park.

Local pubs – The Wheel Inn, the Ye Olde Vaults and the George and Dragon.
