Thrift cottage is a charming cottage, renovated to a high standard whilst retaining lots of original features like panelled doors, the traditional dresser and a lovely stone fireplace with glowing log burning stove. In a little parade of cottages close to the centre of this picturesque village you can really feel part of local life. It's still milk and eggs from the milkman. The Queen Anne pub is famed for its hearty meals and great ale!
There is something almost magical about the scenery as you drive along the lanes to the village. Great Hucklow is out in the 'wilds' of Derbyshire in the real Peak District with its patchwork of stone walls and fields, fantastic stone edges, magnificent dales and lovely sparkling rivers. Climb to the top of Hucklow Edge as the paragliders float by, have a pint in the Barrel Inn and just marvel at one of the best views in the world.
Yet the interesting 'plague' village of Eyam is just a few minutes' drive away as is Tideswell with its range of shops, pubs, cafes and 'Cathedral of the Peak' church. Then in complete contrast you are not far from attractions as diverse as Chatsworth House, Carsington Water, Castleton's caverns, the National Tramway Museum and even Alton Towers,
An attractive beamed lounge with comfortable cottage suite, window seat, traditional dresser, dining table and chairs, T.V., DVD, Freeview, WiFi and glowing log burning stove. A little galley kitchen with cooker, microwave and fridge. A nicely tiled downstairs shower room with shower and W.C. A lovely double bedroom with king-size bed and furniture. A twin bedroom of the same quality.
Linen and towels are provided. Storage heating, power and an initial supply of fuel for the stove are included. A cot and high chair can be requested. There is a small rear patio with table and two chairs. Parking is on the lane right outside the cottage. A small pet is allowed by arrangement. Smoking is not permitted. Access for people with disabilities may be difficult.
Weekly bookings are normally Friday to Friday but short breaks are available throughout the year excluding Xmas and New Year. Bookings for Christmas and New Year are from Tuesday to Tuesday.
Nearest pub - Gt. Hucklow 100 yds. Nearest village shop - Tideswell 2 miles. Nearest supermarket - Tideswell 2 miles.
"Thrift Cottage is a pretty and well maintained place to stay in the heart of the Peak District. The wood burning stove is a good asset when the evenings are cold after a day out walking or sight seeing. Derbyshire Country Cottages are very friendly and helpful if there are any problems. Pub right across the road for some stiff refreshment. We wholeheartedly recommend this listing."

"Really nice, cosy cottage. Had trouble getting the fire to stay lit, but that was probably operator error. And it was warm anyway with the storage heaters! Shower lovely and warm, beds comfy and kitchen well equipped"

"Really ideal little cottage for a short week. Great Hucklow is of course well located despite lack of village amenities like a shop etc. The house only lacks outside space but when you're out and about this little matters. The property is well appointed, and good value. A bath for kids and an upstairs loo would be an added bonus but as with many Peaks cottages, space is tight. I would definitely like to think I would return with my little ones next time!"
