Lovely place to stay and had everything we needed. Beautiful view and many great walks in the area... It's been great!!

Family Party,

Excellent stay with all the lovely, thoughtful touches. Have recommended the accommodation to family in the area.

Previous Customer,

Once again a most enjoyable stay in your lovely home. Plus, we've been fortunate with the weather so were able to relax on the patio and take in the stunning view. A BIG thank you!

Family Party,

Excellent instructions meant that we found Ellencroft without difficulty. Lovely home in a beautiful setting. We have enjoyed exploring locally and further afield, from our very clean and comfortable accommodation, with every need catered for. We weren't too lucky with the weather but it improved during our stay. Many thanks for all the care and attention you put into preparing things for our arrival and stay.

Family Party,

Lovely accommodation here that suited us well for a long weekend with family. Enjoyed local walks including along Unstone Line. Thank you to Jan and Kay for the wine and card to greet us - we've had a restful time!

Family Party,

Lovely bungalow, lovely garden, lovely countryside. So much trouble had been taken to make us feel very very welcome.

Mrs Marian O,

We had a fantastic long weekend here. Great views, perfect weather and excellent food and drinks about. Couldn't ask for more. Thank you for sharing your beautiful home with us!

Group of Friends,

Location

APPERKNOWLE NEAR CHESTERFIELD

Apperknowle is a picturesque village clinging to the side of the Drone Valley as it makes its way down towards Chesterfield. This is lovely rolling countryside with incredible views out towards the Peak District. There are no local shops in the village, just two great pubs. The Travelers’s Rest is famed for its incredible selection of pork pies and cheeses. The Miners Arms in nearby Hundall pulls a mean CAMRA pint.

In many ways you have the best of all worlds while you are there. Chesterfield with its famous Crooked Spire church, colourful market square and all the facilities of a local town is just a ten-minute drive. The Peak District starts on the edge of the town and you can soon be in Bakewell, visiting Chatsworth House or exploring the lovely villages and countryside. Places like Chatsworth and Haddon Hall are really well known but there are lots of other visitor attractions such as the National Tramway Museum, the National Stone Centre, Carsington Water and the Heights of Abraham.

Turn the other way and the famous Dukeries area of Nottinghamshire is there in front of you. Renishaw Hall, gardens and vineyard are well worth a visit. Hardwick Hall is a wonderful Elizabethan house created by Bess of Hardwick in the 1500’s. Or how about exploring Clumber Park, storming the battlements at Bolsover Castle or joining Robin Hood’s Merry men in Sherwood Forest.

Local pubs: The Travelers Rest in Apperknowle. The Miners Arms in Hundall. The Devonshire Arms in Middle Handley.

CHESTERFIELD

Chesterfield is a great place in which to base your holiday, being on the edge of the Peak District National Park but also close to the Dukeries in Nottinghamshire, with their links to Robin Hood’s Sherwood Forest and much, much more. The town has a lovely cobbled market square, the Crooked Spire Church, lots of independent and the usual high street shops, supermarkets, a multiplex cinema and a few nightclubs as well.

A 15-minute drive will get you to Chatsworth House, Haddon Hall, Bakewell’s famous Monday market and then off into the real Peak District, with its beautiful valleys, sparkling rivers, picturesque villages, with many a country pub and countryside walks galore. Caudwell’s Mill in Rowsley is just a little place but one of our favourite stops, with its ducks on the river, vegetarian café, craft workshops and, of course, the old water powered flour mill.

Look the other way towards Nottinghamshire and there is just as much to see and do. Bolsover Castle stands proud on its ramparts, peaceful Clumber Park is worth a visit, Hardwick Hall is not to be missed, pretend you are Robin Hood at the Major Oak or, if you are into heritage railways, there is the famous Barrow Hill Roundhouse.

Local pubs - The Lamb Inn in Holymoorside, the Bulls Head in Holymoorside and the Red Lion at Stonedge.
