Set on the old wharf, there are lots and lots of adventures to have in and around Sir Richard Arkwright's industrial revolution village. Cromford Mill will transport you back in time. Masson Mills with their heritage centre are well worth a visit. Save an afternoon to explore the old streets and alleyways in the village or wander along the leafy canal feeding the ducks.

Walk in the opposite direction and you are soon in Matlock Bath with its little Switzerland gorge, cable cars, caverns, interesting shops and riverside prom. This is the true 'gateway' to the Peak District with its myriad of attractions like Chatsworth House, famous Bakewell, sparkling river valleys and breath-taking grit stone edges.

Reviews

Lovely, quirky property with an old fashioned/traditional feel...something we like very much. All amenities needed are there. House is very clean. Really appreciated the 'welcome' pack left for us. A good base for exploring the area. All appliances in the kitchen are electrical which leaves me wondering how safe a water fire extinguisher is....perhaps a foam or powder extinguisher would be better. However, we really enjoyed our much needed break..thank you x Owner replies: thank you for your feedback and this issue has been reviewed and dealt with.

Mrs R,

A fabulous house, well equipped if you’ve got small children. With stair gates, high chair and cot, and easy access straight onto the canal for walks. The house was very clean and lots of thought had been put into small touches. We will definitely be back.

Miss L,

This is a lovely cottage, spotlessly clean, well equipped, warm and spacious. We were delighted to find some Christmas decorations and thank you very much for the treats the owners left for us - home baked cakes, chocolate, milk, Mulled Wine and Prosecco etc. We enjoyed our stay and will recommend to others and hopefully come again ourselves.

Mrs E,

Thank you for letting us stay in your beautiful cottage. Wharf is very clean, well equipped and in an excellent location for walks and exploring everywhere the Peak District has to offer. We would highly recommend this cottage.

Ms P,

The location was excellent for trips out to the many local attractions. The property was comfortable, warm and welcoming and was very well equipped. The welcome pack was generous. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and look forward to returning.

Mr N,

This is a lovely property, well provisioned and in a great location. Cromford Mills and the canal are literally on the doorstep and it is a peaceful place to stay. We sat in the garden frequently. Easy travel access to lots of attractions.

Ms C,

Immaculately presented historic cottage, beautiful location and thoughtfully equipped with everything you might need.

Dr Kate H,

Thank you again for a lovely stay in this cottage. It was spotlessly clean. Had a relaxing time. Made use of the excellent bus service into Matlock, Bakewell and Chesterfield. Thanks for the treats.

Previous Customer,

Perfect!

Mrs M P,

Thank you for another wonderful week in this splendid cottage. This time we managed a canal trip in spite of the drought.

Two c,

A very lovely place to stay with beautiful furnishings/colours. Beautifully clean on arrival, thank you, and treats very welcome. Recommended by friends; been twice.

Previous Customer,

Thank you for the lovely treats. We loved your cottage, all the beautiful doors and antiques, and it feels so spacious. It is a wonderful place for children.

Family Party,

A thoroughly lovely, spacious cottage. The pictures don't do it justice. Our umpteenth trip to Derbyshire, still finding new walks, the 10 mile Derwent Dam expedition among them. Thank you for a super stay!

Family Party,

Clean, comfortable cottage in an excellent location. Many extras & treats supplied by the owners made us feel very welcome.

Mrs Jacky J,

The Amazon Firestick is a nightmare to use, and then to not use when we wanted to watch a DVD!!! The hot water is barely hot enough for running a bath! Interesting, and very large, lump of fluff and dust fell from the bottom of the kitchen radiator! The main gripe is that on the 4th morning I discovered Silverfish, both dead and very much alive, in between the stack of bowls and plates that we had been using!!! On raising this with yourselves I was told that it was the Owners' responsibility and that I should contact them!!! Unbelievable!!! I had wondered the day before why I had a bit of a funny tummy, as I never get a funny tummy, and now I can most likely put it down to Silverfish urine and faeces that they had been spreading all over the crockery!!!!

Previous Customer,

Perfect

Mrs M P,

Lovely location, cottage lovely & immaculate

Mr Ian S,

Location

MATLOCK

Matlock is a historic thriving tourist destination dating back to Victorian times when the railway reached the town and visitors used to come to take the ‘mild water cure’ in the many spa hotels. It still is very much on the tourist map today, being the ideal place from which to explore the many local attractions but also a place that really ‘lives’, with independent shops, a couple of supermarkets and Dale Road with its numerous pubs, cafes and restaurants.

Set in a cauldron of hills, there are lots of days out to be had close by. Matlock Bath has got to be on your list. A 2-penny ride on a tram at the National Tramway Museum will take you back in time. Peak Rail’s trains steam up the valley to give you another taste of the past. And then of course you can explore Sir Richard Arkwright’s Industrial Revolution village at the head of the Derwent Valley World Heritage Corridor.

Matlock is in the centre of everything, even when you look to the east towards Chesterfield, because this opens up another vista of attractions. Chesterfield itself with its colourful market square is worth a visit. Hardwick Hall, of Bess of Hardwick fame, is not much further. How about storming Bolsover Castle’s battlements or being one of the ‘Merry Men’ in Robin Hood’s Sherwood Forest.

Local pubs - The Thorn Tree, Twenty Ten Bar and the White Lion in Starkholmes.
