Markeygate House is an utterly wonderful house, steeped in village history, in a jumble of cottages in the midst of the picturesque village of Tideswell. Renovated to a fantastic standard it combines sumptuous furniture and drapes, oak floors and exposed stone walls, lovely pictures and fittings and even two glowing log burning stoves.
Take an early morning stroll to get some traditional oatcakes for breakfast. Have a daytime wander around the village exploring the little alleyways, 'real' village shops and the 'Cathedral of the Peak' parish church. Start the evening with a bottle of wine on the secret stone flagged patio before wandering out to one of the village pubs. Back at the house the last glass under the stars is always the best!
If the house and village are something to talk about, you will never forget the surrounding scenery. Take a terrific walk across the tops on the Limestone Way or follow the magnificent Monsal Trail down to the mellow market town of Bakewell. On lazier days you might just like to visit Chatsworth House, the Derwent Valley Dams or Matlock Bath's little Switzerland gorge and cable cars. But make sure you get back in time to sample Tideswell's nightlife. All the three pubs do good food and there are even fish and chip shops just a short walk away.
