Location
CHESTERFIELD
Chesterfield is a great place in which to base your holiday, being on the edge of the Peak District National Park but also close to the Dukeries in Nottinghamshire, with their links to Robin Hood’s Sherwood Forest and much, much more. The town has a lovely cobbled market square, the Crooked Spire Church, lots of independent and the usual high street shops, supermarkets, a multiplex cinema and a few nightclubs as well.
A 15-minute drive will get you to Chatsworth House, Haddon Hall, Bakewell’s famous Monday market and then off into the real Peak District, with its beautiful valleys, sparkling rivers, picturesque villages, with many a country pub and countryside walks galore. Caudwell’s Mill in Rowsley is just a little place but one of our favourite stops, with its ducks on the river, vegetarian café, craft workshops and, of course, the old water powered flour mill.
Look the other way towards Nottinghamshire and there is just as much to see and do. Bolsover Castle stands proud on its ramparts, peaceful Clumber Park is worth a visit, Hardwick Hall is not to be missed, pretend you are Robin Hood at the Major Oak or, if you are into heritage railways, there is the famous Barrow Hill Roundhouse.
Local pubs - The Lamb Inn in Holymoorside, the Bulls Head in Holymoorside and the Red Lion at Stonedge.
