Location
WIRKSWORTH
The small historical town of Wirksworth with its imposing stone buildings, maze of alleyways and narrow streets lies on the southern edge of the Peak District.
The town was founded on the lead mining industry, dating back to at least Roman times, but the Industrial Revolution was the basis for the town’s prosperity. Sir Richard Arkwright built Haarlem Mill in the town and this is considered to be the mill in George Eliot’s The Mill on the Floss.
Visitors to Wirksworth will be spoilt for choice for things to do. The spectacular StarDisc – a modern stone circle star chart – is situated high above the town and illustrates the constellations. A must-see on a clear night. The Ecclesbourne Valley Railway, based in Wirksworth, is Derbyshire’s longest heritage railway running to Duffield through a lovely, unspoilt valley and the Wirksworth Heritage Centre tells the story of Wirksworth and its people.
The picturesque market towns of Matlock and Bakewell are within easy reach and it’s also just a short drive to magnificent Chatsworth House or the more homely Haddon Hall.
Local Pubs: Miners Arms in Carsington. Hope and Anchor in Wirksworth. Black Swan in Idridgehay.
